Dirk Verlee obtained a European Master’s degree (licenciaat) in applied linguistics (interpreter) at the Erasmushogeschool in Brussels in 1983. He started his professional career with KBC-bank in Brussels. After that he worked as a school teacher and principal for an American school in Oviedo (Spain). In 1992 he started working as a commercial attaché for the Belgian government in Algiers and went on to become a trade commissioner for the Flemish government in respectively Tunis and Paris (France), where he became the regional coordinator for the neighboring countries. Between 2006 and 2009, he was the Trade and Investment commissioner for Flanders in Los Angeles, CA and the regional coordinator for North and South America. In August 2009 he started working at the Embassy of Belgium in Madrid as the Trade and Investment Commissioner for Flanders.
